Speeds: The table below shows Private Internet Access's average upload, download, and torrenting speeds compared to the other VPNs we tested. I experienced no DNS leaks while using Private Internet Access, meaning the VPN hid my IP address, location, and internet activity from my internet service provider as it should have. I also connected to Facebook and was able to scroll smoothly through my feed. Streaming, Facebook, and DNS leaks: I could stream a high-definition YouTube video while using Private Internet Access without buffering or stuttering. I wish the iOS app offered this functionality because it isn't necessary for security reasons to route LAN traffic through a VPN. The Android app also has network options like the ability to allow traffic on devices such as printers that are connected to your local area network (LAN). In particular, the iOS app didn't allow you to set different settings for different apps, which is a feature I don't need but others may find useful. The Windows and macOS settings choices were identical, but the Android and iOS settings differed somewhat. I easily found the settings menu via icons at the top of the dashboard in each app. There's also a "snooze" button, which is helpful for quickly disconnecting and reconnecting. You can choose a simple view that shows the server you're connected to, a small world map with the location of that server, your original IP address, or your VPN IP address.Īlternatively, you can expand the dashboard to show information like download and upload speeds, amount of data downloaded and uploaded, connect time, and VPN protocol, all of which can be reordered on the dashboard. Settings and Features: One of the things I liked best about Private Internet Access was the wealth of information it shows on the dashboard. This provides faster access and is a time-saving feature that many VPNs offer. Once you find a server that works well, you can mark it as a favorite. Note that the default server may not actually be the fastest for you, so it's best to test several nearby servers. ![]() After I clicked a large on/off button I was connected.įor consistency, I used a server in New York to test all VPNs. Primary Controls: I could select from a list of servers or have Private Internet Access choose the server it thought was the fastest for my location. Look and Feel: Private Internet Access has an attractive black and green interface that shows a lot of useful information (more on this below). All that was left was to enter my previously selected username and password into each app, and I was ready to connect. I downloaded and installed the Private Internet Access apps for Windows, MacOS, Android, and iOS quickly and easily. Here are my impressions of using the service. 3 in our rating of the Best VPNs of 2023. That said, I understand many people want software, including VPN software, that “just works” without a lot of settings to adjust. You can choose from ANY possibility! These felines are so stunning to look upon, and they deserve names that reflect their beauty. The ideas for calico cat names are endless. With so many possibilities in pattern and shade, calico cats stand out from the crowd. In the United States, calicos were considered SO lucky, they were named “money cats.” Keeping a calico in your home was rumored to bring your household good fortune- literally! And that’s why the popular Maneki Neko statues you find around Japan usually sport calico patterns. Japanese sailors preferred these tri-colored felines over any others when they went out to sea. The Germans weren’t the only ones to associate calicos and luck. If you rubbed one of these magical feline’s tails over a wart, the blemish would disappear. Unfortunately, Hera uncovered the deception and changed Galanthis into a calico cat.Ĭeaileacó (Irish for calico) cats held the power to heal – or so old tales would have you believe. Desperate to prevent Hera from interfering with Hercules’s birth, Galanthis tricked the goddess into believing the demi-god had already been delivered. The Greek myth of Hercules refers to the servant, Galanthis. And some of those legends can provide the perfect inspiration for calico cat names. Tobi mike: In Japan, these stunning felines have a name that means “triple fur.”Ĭalico cats held a special place in our earliest stories.Lapjeskat: Holland capitalizes on the pattern of the calico coat, calling them “patches cat.”.Glückskatze: For the Germans, these cats stood out, and the word translates to “lucky cat.”.They’re one of the few felines to earn unique names around the globe, too: You’ll find calicos popping up in every culture – and, surprisingly, the legends all have a positive slant! People knew they were looking at felines with something more (possibly due to no two calicos looking alike). With such a special hair coat, calico cats have carved out their place in our mythology. Tortoiseshell: If you don’t see patches of white, your cat is considered a tortoiseshell.Dilute: When the black and orange soften to grey and peach, you have a dilute on your hands.Calico: These kitties have white in their mixture. The combination of the colors, and how dark they appear, determines what kind of calico you have: However, there are different types of calicos. Most people think “calico” when they see three coat colors combined. However, because they have that extra chromosome, these males usually end up sterile. The male cats end up with two X chromosomes, allowing for the B and b gene combination. ![]() This is due to a condition known as Klinefelter (and it happens in humans, too). In fact, only one out of THREE THOUSAND males will develop the calico pattern. Now, you CAN find male calicos, but it’s RARE. When the three get together? You have the distinct tri-colored coat of the calico. And that’s ANOTHER gene affecting skin color. Voila! A calico cat’s born! Of course, you still need to account for the white you see. ![]() And as the cells divide and grow, you get patches of orange or black. Some of the cat’s cells decide to express a B gene, while others express the b gene. One of the chromosomes in a cell curls up and forms a Barr body. Instead, they lead to a cat with patches of BOTH. The two colors DON’T cancel each other out. And now and then, they end up with a B and b together. But females? They have two X chromosomes, so they have a chance at some gene scrambling. And why? Because males only have one X chromosome (more on that in a second). Male cats? They’re usually solid in color. The genes for cat fur color are carried on the X chromosome (B=orange, b=black). And it starts with parents carrying genes for a black coat and an orange coat. You need the proper genetic conditions for calico fur to show up. Your lovely calico will hold their tail up with pride with any of these name options! Calico CatsĬalicos aren’t common coat colors – and for a good reason. Why settle for “Patches” or “Callie” when you can choose something special? Luckily for you, we have 108 calico cat names that break the mold. And they deserve a name that captures that amazement. These beautiful cats take your breath away. It’s one of the best parts of sharing your life with a calico. And you never know what pattern you’ll get! Every calico looks unique. The blend of black, orange, and white always looks stunning. When you stumble across a calico cat, you know you have something special. "He's _ no good" (doing something wrong): 2 wds. Embers float through shattered battlefields and down dusty streets, while crystal-clear lakes slowly churn the bodies of long-dead soldiers. His hulking frame shambles beautifully, but he turns on a dime so quickly, with nary an in-between animation frame, that it often resulted in me eating an unexpected face full of spear.īut the generally fantastic art direction extends throughout the Citadel itself too, which contains a number of beautifully diverse biomes to briefly venture through before the next boss. An early example is while fighting the Guardian, a corrupted god who very much evokes Demon’s Souls’ Tower Knight. If there’s a complaint to be made, it’s that the isometric 2D format and pixel art style can sometimes result in boss attacks being a little less clear than they would be in a 3D action game. Its art is equally important in battle, where an emphasis is placed on learning a boss’ tells in order to better dodge and exploit openings. The excellent pixel art style results in some fascinating animations, selling the corruption of a massive knight as dozens of tendrils spring from his arms, or when an ancient god of light wearily stands up from his throne of massive electrical cables. With only 10 bosses, I was worried Eldest Souls would be a light meal, but each one and their accompanying arenas are imbued with enough creativity to make every fight feel like the spectacle it needs to be. And thankfully it makes doing so a painless process, with quick respawn load times, and even choosing the “give up” option to take a breather only requiring a short walk back to the boss’ arena. I died 519 times to Eldest Souls’ bosses, but even when it spurred me to yell obscenities across the living room, I immediately wanted to hop back in for another try. The number of times I came within a millimeter of death, only to climb my way back with careful strikes, desperate healing, and mashing the square button made the victories even sweeter. That said, these fights are all impeccably balanced, threading a fine line between frustrating and devilishly tantalizing. But on a first playthrough, which took me about 15 hours overall, that focus on replayability means fighting some of the early bosses were slightly less enthralling without a wide array of abilities at my disposal. The story is designed to be played through multiple times, with a New Game Plus and Arena mode for those who want it. With such interesting tricks to try, it’s a bit of a shame that Eldest Souls can be stingy with its skill points at first. reward too, like a special attack that deals extra damage but also hurts you if you’re over 50% health, but heals if you’re under 50%. Infusing boss shards into different slots can prove to be an interesting game of risk vs. While fighting the feral Deer God, who attacks with lightning-fast swipes and poisonous roots, I instead respec’d to give myself increased speed to keep up with his great strides across the arena, while flaming leaves I spawned chased him down for guaranteed chipdamage. Those swords later shattered upon a successful counter, briefly tripling damage and providing me a moment of solace in the chaos. Going up against Hyem, a frostbitten armored warrior with the power to slow my dashing, I found myself suiting up with a defensive ability that spawned swords of light with each bloodburst attack. ![]() I loved this freedom because it consistently surprised me with what combinations were viable. Mercifully, you can completely respec your character any time between fights. Equippable “shards” gained from defeated bosses can also give you extra abilities or buffs depending on how you slot them for further customization. ![]() What results is a nearly nonstop dance of dodging and exchanging desperate blows.Ī skill tree lets you specialize your combat style between three branching options as you progress: Windslide, which focuses on movement and speed, Berserk, which improves your damage output, and Counter, which buffs your defensive options. To that end, Eldest Souls very much encourages an in-your-face play style, with charged and bloodburst attacks replenishing small fragments of health, much like Bloodborne. There are no enemies to fight outside of its 10 bosses, so you’re never more than a few hits from death. With your giant obsidian sword, you can use a basic swing, a dash, a charge attack, and a powerful “bloodburst” attack that drains your charge. Switching influences, Eldest Souls’ combat takes more inspiration from Bloodborne than it does Dark Souls, with a quicker pace and emphasis on aggression. Historically, windows were one of the most important and expensive architectural features of a building. The wooden window sash that was designed and constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries is an elegant joinery solution to the problem of illuminating buildings in a time when large flat panes of glass were difficult to make and artificial light was expensive and inefficient. ![]() We recently revisited the classic RPG after watching Disney's The Mandalorian, and found that it still holds up, especially compared to the franchise-focused films of today. OHA denied Sevenson’s size appeal and affirmed the size determination holding HGL-APTIM to be an eligible small business. ” It is “beyond the scope of an Area Office’s review” to inquire into the motives of a mentor and protégé in entering into a mentor-protégé agreement, and in any event, in this case, Sevenson’s arguments were merely “speculative.” OHA wrote that the SBA Area Office cannot review “a charge that the should not have approved the MPA in the first place, or that the MPA itself is improper.” Such allegations “are not valid grounds for a size protest, as SBA regulations prohibit any finding of affiliation or control based on a. The Area Office issued a size determination finding HGL-APTIM to be an eligible small business. The SBA Area Office held that it did not have the authority to review the approval of a mentor-protégé agreement. Sevenson argued that HGL and APTIM chose NAICS code 541715 for their mentor-protégé agreement to “circumvent SBA regulations.” In other words, Sevenson suggested, the SBA never would have approved the mentor-protégé agreement under NAICS code 562910, and should not be able to use the mentor-protégé agreement to pursue contracts under that NAICS code. In fact, Sevenson pointed out, “HGL has engaged APTIM as a subcontractor for other projects with NAICS code 562910.” Sevenson contended that HGL did not require the assistance of a mentor under NAICS code 562910 because HGL had “equal if not more” experience than APTIM under that NAICS code. Sevenson noted that APTIM was the incumbent contractor for the remediation work, but was ineligible to bid as a prime because it was not a small business. Sevenson contended, in part, that the SBA should not have approved the mentor-protégé agreement between HGL and APTIM. A competitor, Sevenson Environmental Services, Inc., then filed a size protest. How are ya?” He is in the office of his New York loft apartment, overlooking Hudson River park. “And the Oscar goes to,” he half-whispers in a breathy, suspenseful sigh. “Listen to this,” he says, coming closer to the screen. His party piece turns out to be an impression of Diana Ross, who handed him his statuette for best supporting actor for Cabaret at the Academy Awards in 1973. ![]() When he asks if I want to go to the Oscars I half-believe he’ll take me. There is a glint in his eye when he impersonates a ventriloquist’s dummy, breaks into a snippet of Sixteen Going on Seventeen from The Sound of Music (he once auditioned to play Rolf) and punctuates answers with a high-pitched exhalation that sounds like air escaping from a balloon. All I wanted to know was how he got the nickname Mr Porno when filming his role as the Emcee, the smirking ringleader he created on Broadway in Kander and Ebb’s Weimar musical Cabaret. “S hame on you! How could you bring that up? You wanna see a grown man cry?” Joel Grey is berating me on Zoom. |
